WASHINGTON OUTLAWS SMOKING IN OFFICES

On March 15, Washington became the second state in the nation, with Vermont the first, to ban smoking in virtually all private and public offices.

The ban, which goes into effect Sept. 1, will apply to all offices where clerical, administrative or other business activities take place, the state Department of Labor and Industries said.

However, smoking could be permitted if employers set up designated rooms equipped with special ventilation systems.

The action prompted immediate protest from the tobacco industry.
