Willard to move to Franklin County

Ron Willard, owner of the Willard Cos., a real estate development and construction company, said Tuesday he hopes to relocate his corporate offices from Roanoke County to Franklin County by late summer.

Willard has been a major developer of Smith Mountain Lake property since the 1970s.

He plans to start construction this spring of a 6,000-square-foot building at the intersection of Virginia 616 and 122 in the Scruggs section of Franklin County. The Willard Cos. and its marketing division, Waterfront Properties of Smith Mountain Lake Inc., will occupy most of that building, he said.

The five-acre Franklin County site can accommodate other office buildings as tenants are found, he said.

The Willard Cos. currently occupy 2,300 square feet in a building on Cypress Lane in Roanoke County. The building is one of three in an office complex owned by Willard.

The Willard Cos. include Willard Construction of Roanoke Valley Inc.; Bremble Properties Inc., which operates The Waterfront Country Club and The Water's Edge Country Club; and Waterfront Properties.

Standard, Dibrell call off merger

Standard Commercial Corp., a Wilson, N.C., leaf tobacco dealer, said Tuesday its major stockholder, the Kehaya family, and the company's management have no interest in pursuing a merger with Dibrell Brother Inc., a Danville tobacco and fresh flower dealer. Dibrell on Monday said it had acquired 6.2 percent of Standard's common stock and was interested in a combination of the two companies.

Dibrell and Standard a year ago said they had agreed to merge but after several weeks terminated the agreement.
