COAL MINE DEATHS DOWN FOR 1993

Virginia recorded only one coal mining fatality in 1993, down from 12 in 1992, according to figures from the U.S. Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Nationally, coal mining deaths decreased to a record low of 47 in 1993, according to the figures.

"While every decrease in numbers and rates is encouraging," Labor Secretary Robert Reich said, "far too many preventable accidents are occurring in the nation's mines."

Kentucky led the nation in coal mining fatalities with 19 during 1993, while Tennessee reported four, according to MSHA. West Virginia recorded the second-largest number of coal mining fatalities with 13, but that was a decrease from 17 fatalities in 1992 and 22 in 1991. - Associated Press
