Under the "Scouting for Food" project, Scouts in the Roanoke Valley will deliver specially designed plastic grocery bags to neighborhoods on Saturday.
The Scouts will collect the bags, donated by Kroger, March 26.
Residents are asked to fill the bags with canned goods and place them outside their doors by 9 a.m. on March 26. If the bags are not collected, they may be taken to the nearest Kroger store.
Boys Scouts of America adopted the project five years ago, but Roanoke Valley troops collected food six years ago.
In 1988, "the project was very successful," said Pamela Irvine, food bank director.
Local troops collected several tons of food, she said.
The food bank provides food to agencies that feed people with low incomes. While it receives the majority of its food from manufacturers, the bank also obtains goods through nonprofit organizational service projects.
