RELIGION BRIEFS

FOLK GUITARIST CHARLIE KING, who also is a Christian humorist, will perform March 25 at Second Presbyterian Church to benefit Roanoke Area Ministries. A contribution of $5 is suggested. The program will begin at 8 p.m. at the church at 214 Mountain Ave. S.W.

The King concert offering will provide funds for prescription medicines that many poor Roanoke Valley residents are unable to afford. Helping pay for these is one of the services RAM offers in its emergency aid program, said Susan Adams, a staff member of the ecumenical agency.

\ HOLY THURSDAY LITURGY on March 31 at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church will include a procession into the church from the parking lot at 2505 Electric Road S.W. The procession will begin at 7 p.m. In the church, Mass will include a foot-washing ritual followed by another procession in which offerings, representing the worshipers, will be carried to the chapel. The service , which recalls Jesus' last evening with his friends before the crucifixion, will end with kneeling in the parish garden.

\ AN EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE is scheduled at Camp Bethel Church of the Brethren conference center at 7 on April 3. The Rev. Dan Barnum-Staggerda will speak. Breakfast will follow at Troutville Church of the Brethren. Camp Bethel is near Nace in Botetourt County.

\ GRACE CHURCH, an evangelical Christian congregation at 2731 Edgewood St. S.W., has chosen the Rev. Craig T. Combs as its next pastor. Combs has served as pastor of a Baptist church in Bentley Creek, Pa., for five years. He is a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and served in vocational ministry for 15 years.

He and his wife, Betsy, have two children. At Grace Church he succeeds the Rev. Everett Kier who left the pastorate a year ago. Since then, the Rev. James Schuppe has served as interim.

An installation service for Combs is set for April 3 at 10:45 a.m.

\ CHRIST IN THE PASSOVER will be the theme of a program Sunday at 7 p.m. at Cave Spring Baptist Church, 4873 Brambleton Ave. S.W.

Dave Garrett, a representative of the Jews for Jesus ministry, will be guest leader and will display some of the more familiar articles used by Jews at the Passover celebration each spring.

Jews for Jesus, an international organization, works from nine North American cities. Its goal is to convince Jews that Jesus is the promised Messiah.

\ VINTON BAPTIST CHURCH is among those in the Roanoke Valley Association of Southern Baptists that are joining in the True Love Waits sexual abstinence campaign. To date, 20 youths from the church have agreed to refrain from sexual activity until marriage.

\ "THE CHOICE," a musical drama for Holy Week, is scheduled for two nights this year at Waverly Place Baptist Church. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on March 26 and 27 at the church at 1407 Kenwood Blvd. S.E. Patti Trail is the director. Eighty members are in the cast.

\ THE REV. LUBIMIR MIREJOVSKY, a Czech Republic pastor, will preach Sunday at the 11 a.m. service at Salem Presbyterian Church, Main and Market streets in downtown Salem. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Mirejovsky is studying at the San Francisco Theological Seminary. He also serves in the Czech Brethren Church.

Mirejovsky also will address participants in the Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.

\ THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CHOIR will sing the Easter portion of the "Messiah" by Handel Sunday during a 10:30 a.m. service that replaces the usual two services at the downtown Salem church.

\ LOCUST GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH of Salem is supporting the Community Outreach Program held at Trinity United Methodist Church as a home mission project. Members serve dinner monthly to the 40 children in the after-school tutoring and recreation activities.

Also at Locust Grove, on Sunday at 6 p.m., the Rev. Jerry John of Lynchburg will tell of his recent mission trip to Russia.

The church is at 3415 Locust Grove Lane.

\ " IN THE GARDENS," an Easter musical will be offered March 30 at 6:45 p.m. at West Salem Baptist Church, 500 Turner Road, Salem. A nursery will be staffed for the music/drama.
