Cantafio confirmed Thursday that he had talked to officials at Furman about the job vacated by Butch Estes.
"They called last week and asked for permission from [VMI athletic director] Davis Babb to talk to me," Cantafio said. "I did speak with them, and that's about all I want to say."
Babb was out of town Thursday and could not be reached for comment. Sources close to the situation said Cantafio traveled to Greenville, S.C., for an interview this week and that he was a finalist for the position along with Al Daniel, an associate head coach at North Carolina State.
Cantafio, who became the Keydets' all-time winningest coach this season, has compiled an overall record of 81-147 (.355) in eight seasons. VMI, which finished 5-23 overall and 2-16 in the conference in 1993-94, has not had a winning season during Cantafio's tenure.
Cantafio was an assistant at VMI under Marty Fletcher from 1983-86 before becoming head coach.
Daniel was a standout player for Furman and was the Paladins' associate head coach under Estes before joining the N.C. State staff in 1990. Estes, who resigned at the end of a 10-18 season, had an overall record of 135-122 in nine years at Furman.
A decision is expected from school officials in the next few days.
