Feldman's victory was the first by a Tech wrestler against a higher-seeded opponent in the NCAA Tournament in coach Jerry Cheynet's 20-year tenure. Feldman (26-5), who had a first-round bye, will face unseeded John Kading of Oklahoma in the quarterfinals.
Another Tech wrestler, 12th-seeded Dante Winslow, lost his first-round match in the 158-pound division to Aaron Moran of Purdue, 6-5. Winslow was 26-2 this season and 84-29-1 in his Tech career.
VMI's Charley Branch won an 11-4 decision over Joe Daubach of Eastern Illinois in the 142-pound class in the first round.
In the 150-pound division, the Keydets' Jeremy Ingram lost 3-0 to Jeff Theiler of Arizona State.
In Lexington, Jen Shimrack scored four goals in leading Roanoke College past Washington and Lee 15-8 in ODAC women's lacrosse. The Maroons (2-0, 1-0) got three goals each from Liz Florence and Francesca Foord-Kelcey, and goalkeeper Kathleen Ostar made five saves. Lindsay Coleman scored four goals to lead the Generals (1-2, 1-1).
Doug and Dave Closinski combined for four goals and five assists as Marist defeated Radford 11-8 in a men's lacrosse game in Radford. Doug Closinski had two goals and four assists and Dave added two goals and one assist for the Red Foxes (2-0). Repp Lambert led the Highlanders (1-5) with three goals and one assist.
In Winfield, W.Va., Marshall scored three times in the first inning and went on to a 7-3 victory over Virginia Tech. The Thundering Herd (5-7) used a walk and three doubles to take the early lead, then took a 5-2 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by first baseman Mike Hagey.
William Byrd High School graduates drove in two of the three Hokies runs. Matt Reynolds knocked in one with a double in the third and Josh Herman produced another with a single in the ninth.
John Winters (1-0) was credited with the victory for Marshall. Chris Freeman (1-1) took the loss for Tech (7-8).
Ferrum swept visiting Curry 11-6 and 16-4 in a baseball doubleheader.
In the first game, Anthony Smith (2-0) went five innings for the win, struck out four, gave up two hits and walked one. Chad Maddox and Chad France each went 2-for-3 for the Panthers (8-2).
In the second game, Jimmy Hamilton (3-1) got the victory with four innings of work. He had four strikeouts and a walk and gave up two hits. Todd Cunningham had a solo home run. Maddox added a two-run homer and went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Curry's record is 0-5.
In Winston-Salem, N.C., Wake Forest (9-6) rallied from a six-run deficit to a 9-8 baseball victory over VMI (12-6).
The Keydets scored eight runs aided by three Wake Forest errors in their first two times at bat. The Demon Deacons trailed 8-2 going into the bottom of the third inning, in which they scored three times. They added single runs in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth to go ahead.
For VMI, John Payne homered and had two RBI, and Nate Shepperson went 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Hampden-Sydney (2-5 overall, 1-1 league) came away with an 18-16 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Washington and Lee in Lexington.
The Tigers saw their 12-3 lead disappear when W&L scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh. Hampden-Sydney came back with five in the eighth to take the lead for good.
Bates Brown had four hits and Duane Van Arsdale had three hits, including a solo homer, and three RBI for W&L (3-7-1, 1-3), which lost 15-12 to Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday.
