MAN SHOT IN FRONT OF HOME

A Roanoke man was shot in the chest Thursday night in front of his home after he told a driver he was tired of people parking near his house and disturbing him at night.

Lt. Ron Carlisle of the Roanoke Police Department said Wiley Buck Rutherford Jr., who lives in the 4200 block of Griffin Road Southwest, was found inside his home around 8:30 p.m.

Rutherford, 32, was listed in very serious condition late Thursday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

Carlise said Rutherford told investigators that he was walking home when he noticed a car. As Rutherford passed the car, police said, the driver asked him, "What would you like?"

Rutherford said he didn't want anything but was bothered by people frequently parking near his home and keeping him awake, Carlisle said.

A male passenger then got out of the car and fired two shots from a handgun. The second shot hit Rutherford as he started to run, Carlisle said.

Rutherford made it into his house, not realizing he was wounded until he began having trouble breathing.

The man with the gun and the driver fled before police arrived and remained at large Thursday night.
