RESTAURANT FIRE DAMAGES KITCHEN

A grease fire at Paulo's Ristorante & Lounge on Thursday night destroyed a kitchen fryer, sending flames and smoke into the ceiling. But it didn't stop owner Arthur Bernstein from reopening about an hour after the fire was extinguished by Roanoke firefighters.

"It's St. Patrick's Day, and the show must go on," said Bernstein.

According to Roanoke Fire Capt. Nelson Reed, fire ignited in a deep-fat fryer about 6:45 p.m. Bernstein said the heating control on the unit had just been replaced. The fire spread into the fan above the fryer, continuing into the hood and the ceiling.

Workers and patrons left; no one was injured.
