MONARCHS, HODGE TOP MANHATTAN

Kevin Swann sank four free throws in the final 22 seconds Thursday night as Old Dominion defeated Manhattan 76-74 in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Norfolk.

Old Dominion (21-9) led throughout the second half, with former Laurel Park High School star Odell Hodge leading four players in double figures to finish with 21 points and nine rebounds. Swann added 19.

Brenton Birmingham led Manhattan (19-11) with 27 points.

Old Dominion shot 28 percent in the second half and relied on a tough defense to keep the Jaspers at bay. Manhattan's Jason Hoover hit a baseline jumper to make the score 74-71 with 9 seconds left. Swann then hit two free throws, bringing the score to 76-71 with eight seconds remaining. Ted Ellis of Manhattan hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to end the game.

In the second round, ODU will play Bradley on March 22. Bradley defeated Murray State 66-58 on Wednesday.

In other first-round games Thursday night:

\ Clemson 96, Southern Mississippi 85: At Clemson, S.C., Andre Bovain had 20 points and the Tigers caused 17 second-half turnovers in defeating the Golden Eagles in the first round.
