THE TIPOFF

TWO NEW: The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will introduce two new pieces to the world at its concert Monday night at 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center.

One is ``The Devil's Punchbowl,'' by Lois V. Vierk. It was inspired by the canyon of that name in California's high desert, where beauty and danger exist side by side.

The other is ``Sketches for Solo Violin, Jazz Trio and Orchestra'' by Joe Kennedy Jr., the director of jazz studies at Virginia Tech. It consists of four movements with influences from Beethoven, Ravel and Copland to Duke Ellington, Benny Carter and Thelonious Monk. Kennedy calls the music of African-Americans ``a house of many mansions.''

The program will conclude with ``Concerto for Orchestra'' by Bela Bartok. Tickets are $12 to $18.

A second performance will take place Tuesday night at 8 in Burruss Auditorium of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Tickets are $10.

CHORALLY WE ROLL ALONG: ``Songs of Stage and Screen'' is the title of the program to be presented at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke this weekend by the Roanoke Valley Choral Society.

The musical journey will visit such shows as ``Les Miserables,'' ``The Secret Garden,'' ``The King and I,'' ``Classic Cole Porter'' and many more. Performances are Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 2.

Tickets are $13 for the public, or $8 for students and children. They are on sale at the Mill Mountain Theatre box office (342-5740), the Choral Society box office (343-9127) and at the Jefferson Center.

Jeff Sandborg directs.

The Lakeside Singers will present ``A Choral Portrait,'' featuring music of Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern, tonight at 8 and Sunday afternooon at 3 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta. Tickets are $5 at the door.

The Piedmont Choral Society will present ``The Best of Broadway'' on Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 4 at the Walker Fine Arts Center of Patrick Henry Community College. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

SISTERHOOD: The Kandinsky Trio will present a concert Saturday night at 8 to benefit the Roanoke-Pskov Sister City Association. It will be in Olin Theater at Roanoke College, and a reception will follow it.

The group will perform the Trio Pathetique in D Minor of Mikhail Glinka and The Trio Elegiaque No. 1 of Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Tickets are $10 at the Olin Hall box office. It's open Monday through Friday afternoons from 2 to 5. The number to call is 375-2333. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

ROCK ON: Melissa Etheridge, winner of the rock vocal-female category in the 1993 Grammy Awards, will bring her act to Burruss Auditorium at Virginia Tech Wednesday night at 8. Tickets are $15. Matthew Sweet will open the show. Call 231-5615 or (800) 843-0332.

ELEGANCE: The Southwest Virginia Ballet will present its spring concert Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Hollins College. The program will include two pas de deux by guest artists from the Richmond Ballet.

Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students, senior citizens and children. At the door they will be $10 and $8. Call 387-3978.
