Registration for the GOP mass meeting at Blacksburg Middle School, 501 S. Main St., opens at 9 and closes at 11 a.m., when the business of selecting delegates will begin.
Steve Fast, the Bluefield College professor who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, will speak just after 11. He will then travel to the mass meeting in Floyd County, which also is being held Saturday.
Montgomery Republicans will elect delegates to two party conventions: the June 3 GOP state convention in Richmond, which will choose either Oliver North or Jim Miller as the party's nominee in the U.S. Senate race; and the 9th District convention on May 14 in Wytheville, where Fast will seek the nomination and a new district chairman will be elected.
Party members also will elect a new Montgomery Republican Committee chairman to replace George Alder, who is leaving the area. Real estate broker Pat Cupp of Blacksburg is the leading contender. He unsuccessfully sought the nomination to run against Jim Shuler for the House of Delegates last year.
