GUILTY PLEA IN POT CASE

A Montgomery County man pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to growing 550 marijuana plants in 1991.

Prosecutors dismissed two other related charges against David Charles Wimmer in return for his guilty plea.

The Christiansburg man, according to federal guidelines, will be sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison.

A March 1992 indictment charged Wimmer and Wayne Stewart Shank with growing marijuana on an irrigated plot. The indictment said the two men virtually set up camp at the site so they could fertilize and monitor the plants' growth. To protect the crop, Wimmer kept a .44 caliber pistol and a 12-gauge shotgun at the site. A weapons possession charge was one of the charges that was dismissed.
