DEPUTY CHARGED WITH DRUNKEN DRIVING

A sheriff's deputy was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after the county-owned vehicle he was driving went off the road and down an embankment, State Police said.

Calvin Douglas Ellis, 37, a Bedford County deputy from Moneta, was driving a Ford Explorer Friday evening while off-duty when he ran off the road, Trooper R.G. Snead said. The Explorer was destroyed, Snead said.

Snead took Ellis to the Bedford County Jail, where a breath analysis test was administered. Snead would not release the test results.

Ellis was apparently headed home from a friend's house when the accident occurred, Snead said. He was wearing his safety belt at the time of the accident, which probably helped prevent serious injury, Snead said.
