HOME RUNS TAKE HOKIES PAST WAVE

Home runs by Bryan King and Kevin Barker powered the Virginia Tech baseball team to a 7-4 victory over Tulane on Sunday in a Metro Conference game at English Field in Blacksburg.

King's two-run homer gave Tech a 4-2 lead in the third inning. Barker's solo homer led off the fourth inning, giving the Hokies (9-9 overall, 2-1 Metro) a 5-3 lead. Tech added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Bo Durkac and a walk by King.

Tech's Sean Hummel (3-0) relieved starter Bryce Gammon in the fourth to pick up the victory. Freshman Charlie Gillian pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the save, his fourth.

The Green Wave (13-10, 1-2) got home runs from Larry Schneider and Scott Sidwell. Mike Terhune paced the Green Wave with three hits.

The Hokies play host to Liberty today at 3 p.m.

In Statesboro, Ga., Tim Roth scattered seven hits and Kevin Hallman had two hits and drove in two runs to help Georgia Southern to a 4-0 Southern Conference baseball victory over VMI.

Roth (5-2) struck out eight and walked two as Georgia Southern (15-9 overall, 6-2 Southern Conference) completed a three-game sweep. Roth, a right-hander, has allowed one run in his past 34 innings and has three shutouts this season.

Tyson Whitley and Tommy Peterman added two hits apiece to the Eagles' 12-hit attack.

John Payne (2-2) allowed all 12 hits and four runs, striking out four and walking two for VMI (9-12, 6-6).

In Jamaica, N.Y., the fifth-ranked Virginia men's lacrosse team whipped St. John's 19-12. Greg Traynor, Tony Nugent and Doug Knight each scored three goals for the Cavaliers (3-1). UVa led 7-2 after the first quarter and held a 12-5 halftime lead. Robert Roddini led St. John's (1-3) with five goals. UVa next plays Johns Hopkins on Saturday in Charlottesville.
