ROANOKE, GOODVIEW ANGLERS WIN TOURNAMENT

Robert Vader of Goodview and Jim Chewing of Roanoke teamed to win the 15th Spring Partners' Bass Tournament on Smith Mountain Lake out of Smith Mountain State Park on Saturday.

Vader and Goodview shared the $1,000 prize and beat 39 other two-man teams.

Ricky Bartis of Fieldale and Jeff Newman of Spencer split $600 for taking second, and brothers Gary E. King of Vinton and Donald King of Hardy shared $350 for third place. Butch Thorpe and Joel Reese, both of Forest, won $210 for fourth. Thorpe and Reese also won the $390 lunker pot for their big bass, which weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was 24 inches long.

Last year's tournament entrants hauled in 54 bass. This year's event, sponsored by the Smith Mountain Ruritan Club, landed 103 fish weighing a total of 214 pounds.

The Roanoke Star White Under-13 soccer team finished second in the Winchester Apple Core Tournament Classic in Winchester this weekend.

Roanoke defeated Winchester United 3-1, Herndon 1-0 and Prince William 3-2 in the round-robin tournament before losing to Charlottesville 4-1.

Landon Moore, Adam Childers and Aaron Pellit each scored two goals for Star White during the tournament.
