SUSIE OAKEY FIFTH GRADE GREEN VALLEY ELEMENTARY

Susie Oakey Fifth grade Green Valley Elementary School

When her banker husband was considering taking a job in another city several years ago, Susie Oakey says she was scared. Not only did she not want to leave the Roanoke area, she "couldn't imagine teaching anywhere else."

Oakey's husband changed careers and the language-arts teacher was able to stay at the school she calls "just right." Oakey, who has spent all her 20 years as a teacher at the Roanoke County school, says she and Green Valley are a good fit. "The kids here are neither under or overprivileged. It's a great place to teach."

"Mrs. Oakey understands the students and is helpful. And she makes us do projects in reading, and I like projects," said one of her nominators. Oakey says she believes projects are important learning tools because they give children a chance to be creative and learn how to pull different pieces together into one. "When you grow up, you have to get it all together," she said.

Oakey, who lives in Roanoke County, is married and the mother of a 24-year-old son. She enjoys needlework, travel and gardening.
