COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER CHARGED WITH ARSON

The manager of the Blacksburg Country Club has been charged with setting the building on fire last month.

Judy Dean, 48, was charged Friday when she came to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office voluntarily after being released from Saint Albans Psychiatric Hospital in Pulaski County.

Law enforcement officials had said they had a warrant for her arrest but were holding it until Dean was released from Saint Albans.

Dean was released on bond, said Skip Schwab, assistant commonwealth's attorney.

The country club burned the night of Feb. 27. Gasoline was used to fuel the fire. Investigators believe, based on notes they found in Dean's car, that she set the fire in a misguided effort to help the club get back on its feet financially. And, they said, Dean planned to take her own life by taking a mixture of nerve pills and alcohol.

The blaze caused $450,000 damage to the building, authorities said.
