FREELAND TOSSES NORTHSIDE TO WIN

Mark Freeland pitched a three-hitter as Northside opened its season with an 8-0 victory over the Blacksburg Indians (1-1) on Tuesday. Freeland struck out 10.

Eric Miller went 2-for-2 with two RBI and five stolen bases, and Jay Stafford was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Vikings, who finished with 16 steals.

Heritage of Lynchburg scored four runs off Patrick Henry errors and beat the host Patriots 5-2 in the opener for both teams. Chip Smallwood was the losing pitcher, striking out seven and giving up six hits in a complete-game effort.
