8 UNEARNED RUNS POWER FLOYD TO WIN

Floyd County scored eight unearned runs and beat Radford 9-7 in a baseball game Tuesday in Radford.

Radford (0-2) had 10 hits and nine errors. The Bobcats led 2-0 going into the top of the fifth inning, but Floyd County (1-0) scored two unearned runs in the inning to tie the score. The Buffaloes scored six unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take control.

Joe Thompson went 2-for-4 and Peter Bucklin was 2-for-3 to lead the Buffaloes. Travis Griffith was 2-for-2 and Jason Woolwine went 2-for-3 for Radford.

In other baseball:

Patrick Steele's single knocked in Marty Smith with the winning run as Giles edged host Christiansburg 5-4 in the opener for both teams.

Danny Woodzell went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI as Bath County defeated Buffalo Gap 12-8 in the opener for both teams. Kris Phillips (1-0) got the victory for the Chargers.

Mark Freeland pitched a three-hitter as Northside opened its season with an 8-0 victory over Blacksburg (1-1). Freeland struck out 10.

Eric Miller was 2-for-2 with two RBI and five stolen bases, and Jay Stafford was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Vikings, who finished with 16 steals.

In Galax, Bobby Cheeks went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run as Grayson County (2-0) drilled Galax (0-1) 10-3 in a non-district game.

In Riner, Kevin Mann hit a home run and drove in six runs, and Dewayne Wopp went 3-for-4 with one RBI as Shawsville waxed Auburn 17-5 in the opener for both teams.

The game was stopped after six innings because of the slaughter rule.

Bradley Hudgins was 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead Auburn .
