WYTHE RALLIES FOR 6-5 WIN IN BASEBALL

Tom Jakubiak scored on a two-out single by Brian Repass in the bottom of the seventh inning as George Wythe rallied past Fort Chiswell 6-5 on Wednesday in a high school baseball game in Wytheville.

Jason Otey was the winning pitcher as the Maroons improved their record to 2-0.

Otey came on in relief in the fourth inning and did not give up a run. Wythe trailed 5-1, but scored two runs in the seventh inning to win.

In other high school sports Wednesday:

In Narrows, Whitey Blankenship went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, four RBI and three runs scored as Narrows whipped Craig County 16-6 in the opener for both baseball teams.

In Alleghany, Scott Carper hit two three-run homers, and Kameron Crowder added a two-run shot as Alleghany blasted Covington 13-2 in the Moutaineers' baseball opener.

In Shawsville, Ben Basham was 2-for-2 with four RBI, and Drew Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBI as Shawsville (2-0) whipped Galax 16-4 in a non-district baseball game.

In Pearisburg, Jay Safford had three RBI and L.J. Hensel had two RBI as Blacksburg (2-1) used a five-run second inning to edge Giles 7-5 in a five-inning baseball game.

In Martinsville, Quinn Borres, Marty Martin and Todd Johnson scored the goals as Martinsville beat Franklin County 3-1 in its boys' soccer opener.
