BASEBALL BROKEN THUMB SIDELINES JAYS' JOE CARTER

World Series hero Joe Carter is expected to miss at least a month of action with a broken right thumb, suffered when he was struck by a pitch from Minnesota's Scott Erickson during the Toronto Blue Jays' 12-9 victory in Dunedin, Fla.

Carter, whose three-run homer off Mitch Williams in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 6 in Toronto gave the Blue Jays their World Series championship over Philadelphia, was not believed to be seriously injured at first. The fracture was discovered during postgame X-rays.
