ETC. CANADA'S STOJKO TOPS MEN'S TECHNICAL PROGRAM

They shrieked for Elvis at the World Figure Skating Championships in Chiba, Japan. Elvis Stojko, that is.

The Canadian won top marks from all nine judges in the technical program and will go into today's free-skating portion as the leader.

Stojko was runner-up in February's Olympics and the 1993 World Championships. His sparkling performance in the 2 1/2-minute program, worth one-third of the total score, received marks of 5.7 to 5.9 of a possible 6.0 for both technique and artistry from the judges. It also elicited whoops from the crowd.

Philippe Candeloro of France, the Olympic bronze medalist, was second after the technical program. Vlacheslav Zagorodniuk of Ukraine, the European runner-up, was third.

Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov of Russia skated to the pairs title, beating defending champions Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler of Canada.

Fox Network has joined forces with the NFL again, this time as a co-partner in a new World League. The new all-European World League will start play in April 1995 with six teams, including the three most successful franchises in the original World League - the London Monarchs, Barcelona Dragons and Frankfurt Galaxy.

The other three teams will be chosen in the next few months. The candidates are Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Munich in Germany; Madrid, Spain; Paris; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Edinburgh or Glasgow, Scotland.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent tackle William "Refrigerator" Perry to two one-year contracts. Financial terms were not disclosed.
