The score was tied at 3 entering the ninth inning, but the Mountaineers' Danny Allard scored on shortstop Rich LiVolsi's single down the left-field line. LiVolsi scored off a grounder to shortstop later in the inning, giving Appalachian State (11-11) a 5-3 advantage.
Tech's David Fitt scored on a Popeye Smith double in the bottom of the ninth to make it 5-4, but the Hokies (9-10) left Smith at third base.

In Radford, East Tennessee State pounded out 25 hits to outscore Radford University 18-12 in baseball at Dedmon Center Park. Shortstop Wade Evans had four hits, including three doubles, and two RBI to lead the Buccaneers (8-10).
Freshman shortstop Kelly Dampeer, a Northside High School alumnus - hit his first collegiate home run - a two-run shot in the fourth inning, for the Highlanders (9-8).
Lynchburg pounded out 20 hits en route to a 25-3 victory over visiting Washington and Lee in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game that was shortened to seven innings.
Bates Brown (2-for-3, one RBI) and Will Jordan (2-for-4) provided the offensive highlights for the Generals (3-10-1 overall, 1-6 ODAC). Lynchburg is 8-2, 1-0.
Liz Florence and Lisa Franzino each scored four goals and Florence added four assists as Roanoke edged visiting Colby 11-9 in women's lacrosse.
Jen Pope made 18 saves to keep Colby (1-1) in the game as the White Mules rallied to tie the score at 9 with about four minutes left. Less than a minute later, Franzino scored the game-winner for the Maroons (3-1).
In Norfolk, J.J. Blat had four goals and one assist, and Eric Daly and Bill Metz scored three goals apiece as Roanoke routed Virginia Wesleyan 25-4 in men's lacrosse. The Maroons (4-2) outshot Virginia Wesleyan (3-3) 76-7.
Samantha Gilbert, a forward on the Radford women's basketball team, was named the university's Outstanding Dean's Scholar for the 1993-94 school year. It is the top academic honor in Radford's College of Arts and Sciences.
Gilbert, a senior history major from Auckland, New Zealand, has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in her three semesters at the school since transferring from Casper (Wyo.) Junior College. She averaged 10.1 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game for the Highlanders.
