Heather Dooley and Lisa Carr had two hits each for the Minettes (1-1, 1-1). Appomattox is 0-2 overall and in the district.
Tracy Doupnik and Tamasa Adams combined to pitch a one-hit shutout in William Byrd's 8-0 season-opening softball victory over visiting Heritage.
Sarah Hudson and Adams both were 3-for-3 and scored two runs for Byrd, and Trisha Hamman was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
In Lynchburg, Kari Whitney hit a grand slam and Joy Marraccini hit a two-run homer to lead Cave Spring (1-0) to a 12-8 softball victory over E.C. Glass (1-1).
In Narrows, Whitey Blankenship went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, four RBI and three runs scored as Narrows whipped Craig County 16-6 in the opener for both baseball teams.
In Shawsville, Ben Basham was 2-for-2 with four RBI, and Drew Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBI as Shawsville (2-0) whipped Galax 16-4 in a non-district baseball game. Galax (0-2) was led by Bobby Melton, who was 2-for-3.
In Pearisburg, Jay Safford had three RBI and L.J. Hensel had two RBI as Blacksburg (2-1) used a five-run second inning to edge Giles 7-5 in baseball. The game was called after five innings because of darkness. Giles is 1-1.
Jason Darnell hit a solo home run in the second inning as Glenvar beat host Salem 5-2 in the baseball opener for both teams. Jason Anderson was the winning pitcher, striking out four in four innings of work.
Freshman Tony Lewis won the 100 and 200-meter runs as host Glenvar easily outdistanced Lord Botetourt and Roanoke Catholic in a triangular boys' track meet.
Glenvar's Trish Nervo won the 1,600 and 3,200, breaking her school record in the 3,200 with a time of 12 minutes, 18 seconds, but Lord Botetourt won the girls' competition. Nervo's old record, set last year, was 12:23.
