George Anderson, a supervisor with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, said in a letter to Craig County officials that the treatment would be done between May 10 and June 15.
He said chemicals will be sprayed from helicopters on about 278 acres in the Rocky Gap area, most of which is in Jefferson National Forest.
Anderson said previous control measures seem to be working because the infestation in 1993 was greatly decreased from what it was in 1992, the first year the pests were seen in the Rocky Gap area. The gypsy moth is a caterpillar that defoliates all types of trees in spring and summer months.
