CIGARETTE SUSPECTED AS CAUSE OF ROANOKE COLLEGE DORM FIRE

The fire that damaged Roanoke College's Crawford Hall on Wednesday morning apparently started when a cigarette ignited a couch, according to Salem Fire Capt. Pat Counts.

No one was injured. But 47 students who were living on the third floor, where the fire started, have been displaced from their rooms. The majority are staying at a motel. The school is transporting them to their classes by shuttle bus.

Students from the first and second floors were allowed to return to their rooms Wednesday night, said Teresa Thomas, director of media relations at the college.
