HOKIES ROLL OVER LIBERTY IN BASEBALL

Freshman Kevin Barker went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI as Virginia Tech pounded Liberty 17-4 on Thursday in a baseball game at English Field in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (10-10) scored six runs in the first two innings to take control. Center fielder Popeye Smith led off for Tech in the first inning with a solo home run, and the Hokies added five runs in the second inning and 10 in the eighth.

Bo Durkac and Bryan King drove in three runs each for Tech.

Brian Young picked up the victory in his first collegiate start, striking out three and giving up six hits in 5 innings. Jason Baker took the loss for the Flames (7-11).

In other area sports Thursday:

In Minneapolis, Salem's Dan Summerlin, swimming for North Carolina, earned honorable-mention All-America status in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. The senior from North Cross finished ninth in a time of 1 minute, 47.72 seconds.

Martinsville scored twice in the last 10 minutes to beat host North Cross 3-1 in non-district girls' soccer. Samantha Ferguson led the Bulldogs (2-0) with two goals. North Cross is 0-1.

In Radford, Casey Underwood scored three goals - including the 50th of his career - as Radford (4-0) blanked George Wythe 7-0 in boys' soccer.

Dana Hurt was 3-for-3 with two RBI as Roanoke Valley Christian (2-0) overcame 11 errors to beat Chatham 8-4 in a Blue Ridge Conference softball game in Chatham.

The first open practice of the season will be held Saturday at NASCAR-sanctioned New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Gates open at 9 a.m., with practice to run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for drivers in the track's five divisions.

Infield admission is $10, but the practice session is free for fans.

Racing begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, with a 100-lap Enduro race, plus 35 laps for the Pure Stock division and 25 for the Mini Stocks.
