4 CHARGED IN FIRE AT MIDDLE SCHOOL

Police charged four people Wednesday with arson following a fire at Pulaski Middle School that caused more than $10,000 in damage last Saturday.

Two 18-year-old men - Clifford J. Newby and Keary S. Russell - and two boys, ages 15 and 13, were arrested and charged with breaking and entering in addition to arson, police said.

Police said earlier that the vandals entered the school by breaking a door window, then set fire to a teachers' lounge. The vandals also tossed paint about the school auditorium and damaged some stereo equipment.

In an unrelated incident, police arrested a 15-year-old boy for breaking into a maintenance shed and stealing more than $200 worth of tools, which have since been recovered. Police plan to charge another 14-year-old boy in connection with that incident.

Arraignments for Newby and Russell have been scheduled for April 4, with preliminary hearing dates set for May 30.
