2 SWIMMERS WILL COMPETE IN N.J. MEET

Two area swimmers earned spots on the Virginia Zone swim team recently and will compete in a regional meet next week.

Betsy Garratt of Radford and Graham Gravley of Hillsville will swim in the Eastern Zone Championships March 31-April 2 in Princeton, N.J.

Garratt, 12, is entered in the 50-yard breast stroke and the 100-yard breast stroke. Gravley, 14, will compete in four freestyle events at 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 yards.

In their most recent performances at the Virginia Junior Olympics in Richmond, Garratt won the 100 breast stroke and placed third in the 50 breast stroke, while Gravley finished second in all four freestyle races.

The Virginia Zone swim team is made up of swimmers whose times are among the two fastest in the state in a specific event and who have not earned berths in the junior or senior nationals in that event.
