Garland Jefferson, who resigned his job as the Hilltoppers' head coach in February 1993, could face life in prison for robbery and up to 10 years for each of the remaining 10 charges - five for writing bad checks and five for passing bad checks - when he is sentenced May 6.
Jefferson, 35, pleaded guilty to snatching a woman's purse outside a Lynchburg grocery store. He also pleaded guilty to taking the five checks, none of which was for more than $70, from a friend and cashing them.
Jefferson played basketball at the University of Virginia from 1976 to 1980 and was the team's captain his senior year. He was named Glass' head coach in 1990 and resigned in February 1993, citing health problems.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Kim White said she was not opposed to Jefferson remaining free on bond until his sentencing hearing because he has cooperated since completing a drug-rehabilitation program.
