RADFORD SWEEPS BUCCANEERS

Radford University scored a doubleheader sweep Saturday in baseball, beating Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern 11-10 and 6-5 in Radford.

The Highlanders (11-9 overall, 7-2 in the Big South) trailed 9-8 in the first game, but tied the score on a home run by Brian Pardue in the bottom of the sixth inning. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

Charleston Southern leadoff hitter Ashley Creek hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to give the Buccaneers a 10-9 lead, but Radford's Denny Van Pelt walked and scored on an error by right fielder Ed Scopelitis to even the score.

Radford junior Duane Filchner led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored the winning run on a throwing error by Bucs catcher Quincy Boyd.

Junior right-hander Travis Toms came on in relief to earn the victory. He earned his fourth save of the season, relieving winning pitcher Mike Parker, in the second game.

Filchner hit a two-run homer and Alex Vaxmonsky added a solo homer to help the Highlanders edge the Bucs in the second game.
