UVA'S BARBER SHINES IN SPRING FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE

Tiki Barber, a former Timesland athlete of the year at Cave Spring High School, ran for two touchdowns to highlight a Virginia spring football scrimmage.

Tailback Antonio Prosise also rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Derick Byrd ran for two and passed for one.

Prosise was the leading rusher, with 85 yards on 15 carries. Symmion Willis led the passing, completing 14 of 21 throws for 165 yards.

Tommy Vaughan caught nine passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Patrick Jeffers had 104 yards and a touchdown on six receptions, and Kendall Meade caught five passes for 87 yards.

The Cavs' defense intercepted five passes, recovered five fumbles and had five sacks. Safety Mike Wardlaw had 11 tackles, and cornerback Sam McKiver and linebacker Skeet Jones each made 10 stops.

Cornell Brown, a sophomore from Lynchburg, was the defensive leader in Virginia Tech's first spring football scrimmage. Brown had two sacks for a loss of 17 yards for the Hokies, who had 15 sacks total.

On the offensive side, quarterback Maurice DeShazo completed four of 12 passes for 136 yards, and reserve quarterback Jim Druckenmiller was 8-of-12 for 136 yards.

Shawn Scales, a redshirt freshman, had three receptions, and Cornelius White and Ken Martin had two each.

The Hokies' rushing leader was reserve tailback Ken Landrum, and No. 1 tailback Dwayne Thomas had only 12 yards on six carries.

Tech, coming off a 9-3 season and an Independence Bowl victory, will practice for three more weeks leading to the Maroon-White game April 16 at Salem Stadium.

Four members of the Virginia Tech Boxing Club earned state titles at the Virginia Golden Gloves State Championships in Alexandria on Friday and Saturday.

Brian DeVido won the 201-pound novice division and was named outstanding novice fighter. Josh Feldman was the open super heavyweight champion and was honored as outstanding open fighter.

Other winners were Shawn Webb in the 165-pound novice division and David Brock in the 126-pound novice division.

In Greenville, S.C., first-round leader East Tennessee State shot a second-round 293 to retain the lead at the Furman Intercollegiate golf tournament. Virginia Tech made a move with the second-best round of the day.

Clemson used the low round of the day, a 3-under-par 285, to move into second place, two strokes behind the Buccaneers. The Hokies carded a 1-over 289 and had a two-round total of 592 on the 6,800-yard, par-72 Furman University course to rally from 11th place.

First-round leader Keith Nolan of East Tennessee State shot a 2-under 70 and was at 139, two strokes in front of Virginia's Jimmy Flippen in the individual competition. David Havens led Tech with a 70, Brian Sharp shot his second consecutive 72 and was in seventh place, Sean Farrell carded a 73 and Curtis Deal a 74.
