FLEMING'S HINES ALL-GROUP AAA

The basketball season ended in disappointment for William Fleming's Derrick Hines, when the Colonels lost to Meadowbrook in the Group AAA boys' final. But the postseason got off to a good start Monday for Hines.

The Fleming point guard was named to the first-team All-Group AAA squad in balloting announced by The Associated Press. The team was selected in voting by sportswriters and broadcasters from around the state.

Hines, a 5-foot-8 junior, averaged 16.2 points and 6.5 assists per game for the Colonels. His best scoring game was a 30-point effort in an 82-80 overtime victory over Cave Spring in Fleming's final regular-season game.

The only question about Hines' future is whether he will return to the Colonels for his senior season or transfer to a prep school such as Oak Hill Academy.

Bethel's Tony Rutland, who led the Peninsula District in scoring with a 26.4 average and finished with 1,976 career points, was named the Group AAA player of the year.

Hines and Rutland were joined on the first team by D.J. Dunbar of Churchland, Chandler Evans of Meadowbrook and Ronnell Felton of Hayfield.

Rutland, a 6-2 senior, made the transition from shooting guard to point guard this season. The Wake Forest signee had a 43-point first half in his final game and finished with a career-high 47 points.

Dunbar, a 6-2 junior guard, averaged 20 points, shooting 48 percent from floor. He had 63 3-pointers and averaged 3.5 assists.

Meadowbrook's Evans, a 6-5 senior forward, averaged 15.2 points and 9.2 rebounds and shot 64 percent from the field for the team that defeated Fleming in the state final.

Felton, a 6-1 senior guard, averaged 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists. On two occasions, he made seven 3-pointers in a game. Felton scored 33 percent of his team's points in the postseason.

Mike Sutton of Meadowbrook was named coach of the year. Sutton's Monarchs went 28-2 and became the first Central Region team in 10 years to win the Group AAA championship.

Patrick Henry's Shannon Taylor, perhaps better known as a football quarterback, topped the second team. The 6-5 senior was joined by Troy Allen of South Lakes, Randy Dodson of Herndon, Kevin Robinson of Monacan and Coby Turner of Lee-Springfield.
