YOUNGSTER ADVANCES IN TENNIS

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke advanced to the round of 16 with a victory Monday in the 14-and-under division of the U.S. Tennis Association's Easter Bowl tournament in Miami.

Hippensteel overcame heat and humidity to defeat Derek Miller of San Diego 6-1, 6-3 in a second-round match.

The North Cross student will play today against Andrew Park of San Marino, Calif. Park is ranked No. 1 in his age group in California.

The Charles Town Races has abandoned plans to add a fifth live program to its weekly schedule. The West Virginia horse racing venue had planned to add Thursday night racing to its regular card beginning April 14. Charles Town's schedule will continue to consist of racing on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, post time 1 p.m.; Friday nights, post time 7:15 p.m.; and Saturday nights, post time 7 p.m.

Steve Sheppard has been appointed Director of Public Relations at Martinsville Speedway. He replaces Chuck Martin, who left to pursue other opportunities. Sheppard was a reporter and photographer for the Martinsville Bulletin and covered sports for the Radford News Journal. He resides in Martinsville.

The Ferrum College Alumni Association will bring recently retired Panthers football coach Hank Norton to Roanoke tonight for the final stop on its "Hats Off to Hank" tribute tour.

The event, with light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar social, begins at Holiday Inn Tanglewood at 7:30. The tour already has stopped at Virginia Beach, Reston, Richmond and Staunton.

Norton retired after last season with a 244-77-11 career record compiled in 34 seasons.
