WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

From North flier, mailed this week to several thousand GOP activists statewide:

"So Jim Miller, next time John Warner tells you to attack Oliver North, why not tell Warner to set his sights on Chuck Robb and the Democrats instead?"

From Miller letter to Warner, dated Monday and released Tuesday.

"You have spoken out repeatedly, as is your right, during this election campaign. But if you choose to continue to speak out, then I think you must speak equally about Sen. Robb's deficient character, his lapses in candor, and his lack of integrity . . .

"I fear that the failure of some Republicans, like yourself, to commit themselves to the nominating process is a dangerous and unacceptable trend. You cannot, on the one hand, demand Republican candidates possess integrity and loyalty and, on the other, refuse to accept the obligations and responsibilities that come with participation in the process."

From Warner statement Tuesday:

"Jim Miller, in his letter of Marchy 28, has clearly and explicitly outlined several important questions.

"This is a fair way to publicly frame our few differences on fundamental aspects of politics. I look forward to responding by letter - which will be made public - [today]."
