But sometimes, there is a serious side behind the reason for the competitions and collectibles shows.
The J.C. Waters Memorial Sports Auction and Hotshot Competition is such a case.
J.C. WATERS III was a junior at Floyd County High School four years ago when he was killed by a drunk driver.
But his memory has lived on in the scholarship fund established by his friends and family. In 1990, the year Waters would have graduated from high school, $5,000 was awarded. Since then, $3,000 has been awarded each year.
The memorial scholarship gets its funds from donations and fund-raising. And the annual spots auction and hot shot competition is its biggest event of the year.
About 100 items will be available in the sports auction to be held April 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Floyd County High School.
Some of the more interesting items include: a SHAQUILLE O'NEAL autographed basketball, a JOE MONTANA autographed football, aKEN GRIFFEY, JR. autographed baseball, a JOHN ELWAY autographed trading card, a TROY AIKMAN autographed football, a Dallas Cowboys team picture autographed by coach JIMMY JOHNSON and owner JERRY JONES, a DALE EARNHARDT autographed racing cap, a MICHAEL WALTRIP autographed racing cap, and a RICHARD PETTY autographed photo.

The Hotshot Basketball competition will run all day in the high school gymnasium. There will be eight age groups from pre-school (the only age group with a combined male/female competition) to adult.
Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m. and continue throughout the day. The pre-school, beginners (kindergarten and first grade), advanced beginners (grades 2-3), primary (grades 4-5) and intermediate (grades 6-7) competitions will be before the sports auction, beginning at 10 a.m.
The junior varsity (grades 8-10), varsity (grades 11-12) and adult competition will be after auction, starting at about 3:30 p.m.
Winners in each division receive trophies, runners-up silver medallions and third-place finishers bronze medals.
The cost to enter the hot-shot competition is a minimum donation of $1.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: FNB and London Underground each won their season finale and finished tied at 9-1 atop the Blacksburg Men's A Basketball League.
TIM MCGUIRE and T. PRICE scored 13 points each to lead FNB over the Homeboyz 43-38.
GARY DOWNEY had 22 points and the London Underground downed P.K.'s 60-53.
Shelor's's and Travel Squad each won their last games to finish 8-2, resulting in a tie in the final standings of the Blacksburg Men's B League.
Shelor's got 28 points from JEROME PRESTON as it knocked The Stupid out of a three-way tie for the lead 68-64.
Travel Squad downed Electro-Tec 69-63 as JASON CHRISTIAN scored 17.
Presbyterian I (10-2) won two of its last three games. And that was just enough to stay in front of Presbyterian II (9-3) and claim the Christiansburg Men's Church Slowbreak League title.
The Rebels (12-0) kept up their winning ways with three victories, allowing them to stay just ahead of Triangle Lanes (13-1) as the Christiansburg Men's Open League nears the end of the season.
Woodmen of the World (8-2) won twice and opened a two-game edge over Presbyterian (6-4) in the Christiansburg Women's Open Slowbreak League.
SPIKES AND SERVES SET: Sting (20-0-1) captured the Blacksburg Men's Power Volleyball League title without losing a single game. It won the league title by 41/2 games over Unstables (16-5).
Sharkey's (31-2) swept its last match of the season. And it needed all three victories to claim the Blacksburg Women's League title over Unknowns (27-3).
Total Control (24-0) finished the Blacksburg Coed A Power League with a perfect record and five games in front of second-place K.A. (19-5).
The Fins (16-2) took the Blacksburg Coed B Division 1 title by having fewer losses than runner-up Good Times (16-5).
New Start (20-1) won the Blacksburg Coed B Division 2 championship by six games. Enforcers (14-7) took second place.
SIGN-UPS OF SPRING: Spring means softball. And baseball. And registration for those sports is going on - or coming up - in Blacksburg.
April 8 is the deadline to sign-up for adult spring softball leagues.
Blacksburg will have eight leagues: Industrial-Organizational, Women's Open (in conjunction with Christiansburg and Montgomery County), Men's B and C Leagues, Church A, B and C Leagues and Coed League.
The fee is $235 per team for the Industrial League and $175 for all other leagues. All leagues have a $20 forfeiture fee. And the Men's and Coed leagues have a $10 non-resident fee (at least 75 percent of the roster must be town residents).
Players must be at least 17 years old in the Industrial, Men's and Women's leagues and at least 14 in the Church Leagues.
Meanwhile, youth baseball registration begins Monday at three levels: Pony League (ages 13-14), fee $12; Dixie Youth Baseball (ages 15-18), fee $20; and Girls Softball (ages 9-12 and 13-18), fee $7.
Sandlot baseball and T-Ball registration starts April 18. The fee for sandlot baseball (ages 9-12) is $12. The fee for T-Ball is (ages 7-8) is $7.

Montgomery County offers just about any sport you can think of involving a ball. But registration for many of the activities ends this week.
Registration ends Tuesday for youth baseball. The county offers clinics for youths 5-6 years of age (as of Aug. 1,1994) on Saturday mornings. For older boys and girls, the county has several leagues: T-Ball for youths 7-8 years old; Junior League for youths 9-10 years old; and Sandlot league for youths 11-12 years of age. The cost is $15 per participant
Teams and clinics will be offered in each age group at Auburn High School, Shawsville Elementary, Belview Elementary, Price's Fork Elementary and Bethel Elementary.
Meanwhile, basketball tournaments are also on tap.
Registration continues through Thursday for a pair of youth tournaments.Saturday there will be a One-on-One competition at 9 a.m. and Foul Shooting contest at noon at Christiansburg Middle School. The tournaments will be divided into in two age groups: 13-and-under and 14-17. The cost is $15 per tournament. No registrations will be accepted at the tournaments.
Friday is the last day to sign-up for a pair of adult basketball tournaments. The foul shooting contest will be Monday. The one-on-one battle will be Monday through next Wednesday. Both contests will be at Christiansburg Middle School. The fee is $20 per tournament.
If you want to learn how to play tennis or golf, the county also has a program for you.
Tennis lesson sign-ups continues through Monday. The lessons will be held on Saturday mornings from April 9 to May 14 at all four county high schools. The cost is $15 for youth classes, which will be held at 10-11 a.m., and $20 for adult classes which will run from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
Golf lessons at Cox's Driving Range registration closes Monday. The classes will be at Cox's Driving Range in Blacksburg and will be offered for three successive weeks on both a Monday-Wednesday and a Tuesday-Thursday cycle beginning the week of April 10. Youth classes are at 6 p.m. and cost $15. Adult classes are at 7 p.m. and cost $20. Also, participants will purchase range ball for each class at a discount.
Modified fast pitch softball leagues for men and women are being formed. The leagues will follow ASA rules. Registration runs through Thursday. The cost is $220 per team.
And sand volleyball matches will be held beginning in May at Montgomery County Park. There will leagues for two-person and four-person teams. Registration ends Thursday. The cost is $85 per team.

HAIL TO THE CHAMPIONS: The Spartan Football State Championship Banquet will be Tuesday night at 7 at the Giles High School Cafeteria.
The guest speaker at the event will be MIKE STEVENS from WBDJ Channel 7 and Friday Football Extra fame.
The Banquet will honor the 1993 Division 2 state high school football champions. Rings and plaques will be given out and a highlight film from the season will be shown.
Tickets are $10. They can be purchased at the Dairy Queen in Pearisburg, the Little Giant in Pembroke, the Value Grocery in Newport, Davis Radio & TV in Pearisburg, Eastern Elementary and Mary McClaugherty Elementary through Friday or at the Giles Shoe Center or directly from MARK HUBARD through Sunday.
