OTHER COACHES COMPLAIN, TOO TO JACK BOGACZYK:

I have been reading your column for two years. And usually I enjoy what you have to write. But I took exception with your column on Dean Smith. I agree that Coach Smith does complain at times about the officiating. But so do all other coaches.

Listen to [Virginia's] Jeff Jones sometimes. And I also agree totally with Coach Smith that the kid from Boston College should have been kicked out of the game, for intentionally injuring Derrick [Phelps]. Like Bill Raftery said on television, "There is no place for this kind of conduct in college basketball." He caused Derrick to have a concussion.

And as for Coach Smith complaining about UVa fouling Eric Montross, I have watched this tape after the game, and Coach Smith was 100 percent right. Barnes, Burrough and Alexander were holding Eric most of the game. They all should have fouled out.

In closing, I understand that you and your companions at the newspaper have to be biased to UVa and other state teams. But the bottom line is UVa or any other team in this state will never, ever accomplish what the University of North Carolina has in college athletics.

I can understand Virginia's jealousy. I would appreciate it in the future when you tell the story, please tell the whole story.\ JOHN RYDER JR.\ VINTON
