MAN CHARGED WITH CARJACKING

A Salem man has been charged with attempting to abduct a woman, robbing her, then taking her 1988 Ford Thunderbird from a parking lot at Valley View Mall this month.

It is the first time a carjacking charge has been filed in Roanoke, according to police officials. Last year, the General Assembly enacted a state carjacking statute, which carries a minimum 15-year sentence.

Cory Hargraves, 23, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday night in front of Hunt Park Apartments on the 1700 block of Salem Avenue.

Hargraves was being held in the Roanoke City Jail late Wednesday without bail. Police would not say what led them to link Hargraves to the March 14 incident.

Police say that about 7:15 that night a man tried to force a 41-year-old Vinton woman into her car parked in the eastside parking lot. She resisted, telling the man to take her car keys.

He complied, then grabbed her purse. The victim ran back to the mall. She was not injured.

The man fled in her car, which police recovered the next day on the 2300 block of Clifton Avenue Northwest. The keys were found inside.
