SW VIRGINIA MEN KILLED IN ROAD WORK

A Georgia woman was charged Wednesday in the deaths of two road workers from Virginia who were struck on Interstate 40 as they set up construction barrels in Greensboro, N.C.

Mark Jeffrey Viars, 35, of Dublin and Franklin Blair Bowers, 41, of Austinville were killed Tuesday night. They worked for Haymes Brothers of Chatham.

Shonika Joy Ridely, 20, of Dunwoody, Ga., is charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She is a student at Greensboro's Bennett College, police said.

Ridely was traveling west in the left lane Tuesday when she tried to merge to the right lane, Sgt. R.N. Bell said. She struck a car in the right lane, and her car skidded back to the left lane and hit the workers, Bell said.

Ridley suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
