GLENVAR TOPS SALEM 13-11

Glenvar led by nine runs after three innings, faltered alarmingly as Salem ran off six unanswered runs, then recovered for a 13-11 non-district softball victory on the Highlanders' diamond Wednesday.

Stacey Shelor went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for the Highlanders (2-0-1). Rhonda Rankin had two hits including a long home run for Salem (2-1).

In other softball:

Shannon Solvensky tossed a four-hitter, striking out five and walking two as guest Cave Spring (3-1) beat William Byrd 3-0 in a non-district game. William Byrd is 1-1-1.

Carlisle scored six runs in the seventh inning for a 9-8 victory over Roanoke Catholic in a Blue Ridge Conference game at River's Edge Sports Complex. Liz Landry went 4-for-4 with one RBI for Roanoke Catholic (0-3, 0-3).

James River and host Alleghany combined for 26 hits before James River emerged with a 17-15 victory. Courtney Hash had three hits, including two doubles and a triple, and five RBI for the Knights.

\ BASEBALL: Northside and visiting Glenvar ended up in a 1-1 tie after darkness brought a halt to their game after seven innings. For Northside (3-1-1), Mark Freeland went seven innings and allowed three hits. For Glenvar (3-0-1), David Henderson, Jason Anderson and Alan Taylor combined on a two-hitter.

Shifq Waller went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Al Holland Jr. smashed a home run as William Fleming (1-2) defeated visiting Lord Botetourt 6-4. Brian Davis went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Cavaliers.

Kevin Feazell hit a three-run home run; Ricky Eubanks, Greg Harrison, and Charlie Hammersley combined for six runs batted in; and Hammersley went 3-for-4 as host Salem bombed Patrick Henry 15-3. The Spartans (3-1) had 13 hits. Salem's Brian Crosswhite threw a three-hitter in his first start, striking out four.

\ BOYS' TRACK: Andra Beasley won the 100 yards and the triple jump and anchored the 440 relay as Christiansburg edged second-place William Fleming 62-52. For the Colonels, Dominick Millner won the long jump and the 800 and was on the winning mile relay. Heritage came in third place with 51 points.

Robert Pauley won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Ashley Pearson won the high jump and 110 hurdles to lead Lord Botetourt to a 69-58 non-district victory over host James River. Daryl Williams won the 400 and was on the winning 1,600 relay for the Knights.

Glenvar won a tri-meet with 92 points. Radford was second at 82, Carroll County was third at 36, and William Byrd finished fourth at 22. Radford's Eric Barton won three events - the triple jump (39 feet, 1 1/2 inches), the long jump (19-6 1/2) and the 300-meter hurdles (43.3 seconds).

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Kathy Flanagan won the long jump, triple jump and 100-yard hurdles and was on the victorious 440 relay as Heritage won a tri-meet at William Fleming. Bethany Eigle won the mile and two-mile for Christiansburg, which finished second. Fleming was third.

Wendy Heath won the triple jump, the 100 hurdles and the 200 and was on the winning 400 relay team and four other girls won two events each as guest Lord Botetourt crushed James River 83-34. Melissa Baker won the 100 and the 300 hurdles for the Knights.

Trish Nervo of Glenvar broke her own school records in the mile and 3,200-meter run in a four-team meet at Radford. Nervo ran the mile in 5 minutes, 32.3 seconds and the 3,200 (two miles) in 12 minutes even. Nikki Holloway of Radford was another big winner; she won the 100-meter dash in 13.4 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.5 seconds and ran the anchor leg on the winning 400-meter relay team. The Highlanders won the meet with 93.5 points, Glenvar and William Byrd tied at 47 and Carroll County finished with 38.5 points.

\ SOCCER: Jim Robinson scored two goals and Ed Culicerto had two assists as Blacksburg beat host Northside 4-1 in a non-district soccer match. Ryan Sboray scored the Vikings' goal.
