The decisive inning started innocently enough, with Kinston reliever John Hrusovsky walking Bucs shortstop Lou Collier and second baseman Chance Sanford hitting into a force play that erased Collier. Right fielder Jake Austin then sent Sanford to second with an infield single.
Salem (30-36) took a 4-3 lead when shortstop Eddie Lantigua misplayed left fielder Danny Clyburn's grounder, allowing Sanford to score. The Bucs added a run in the inning on third baseman Mitch House's single to right field off Hrusovsky (0-3).
House accounted for Salem's first two runs when he followed Clyburn's single with a home run to left field off Indians starter Tommy Taylor in the second inning.
Kinston (26-38) tied it in the third on Jon Nunnally's RBI single and Chad Townsend's run-scoring fielder's choice off Bucs starter Matt Ruebel (6-6).
Each team scored a run in the seventh - Salem on catcher Marcus Hanel's RBI groundout and the Indians on Epi Cardenas' homer to left-center.
After the Bucs took the lead, Matt Ryan relieved Ruebel. Ryan gave up a walk and two hits, but escaped damage with the help of a double-play grounder.
Salem closer Marc Pisciotta came on to preserve the victory and earn his 19th save.
The teams wrap up the series at 7 p.m. today, with Jason Abramavicius scheduled to pitch for Salem and Maximo De LaRosa penciled in to start for Kinston.
