Economic development

BLACKSBURG - Volunteers and local government officials who want a better understanding of the economic development process may get the information they need through the Virginia Institute for Economic Development's "Community Economic Development: The Basic Course," offered through Virginia Tech.

The basic non-credit course - for local government officials and volunteer community leaders interested in economic development - leads to a certificate of study in economic development. It includes five days of seminars and seven weeks of home study. Two sessions are scheduled, Sept. 19-21 and Oct. 31-Nov. 2, at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center at Virginia Tech.

Registration ends Tuesday, Sept. 6. The course is limited to 50 participants. A $250 tuition fee includes course materials, textbooks, meals and refreshments. Three partial scholarships are available from the Virginia Economic Developers Association.

Mountain Cup

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Rugby Club will host the 5th Mountain Cup Tournament this weekend at the field located behind Gables Shopping Center.

The tournament begins 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, and continues through 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4.

There are six teams participating from Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee.

NRCC closing

DUBLIN - All New River Community College offices, including the Division of Learning Resources and Instructional Technology, will be closed and classes cancelled Monday, Sept. 5, for the Labor Day holiday.

Offices will reopen and fall semester classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Tech Welcome Tea

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Faculty Women's Club will begin its 1994-95 program with a Welcome Tea at the Grove on Virginia Tech campus Wednesday, Sept. 7, noon-2 p.m.

Membership is open to women members or wives of administrative, instructional, research and extension faculty and staff at Virginia Tech, as well as retired faculty and administrative staff women, wives or widows, mothers or mothers-in-law of retired administrative staff and faculty. Newcomers are welcome.

11th Quigley Run

CHRISTIANSBURG - The 11th Annual Cheryl M. Quigley Memorial Run will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m. The memorial run is sponsored by The Christiansburg Jaycees.

Entry fee is $10 until Sept. 7 or $12 after this date or on race day.

'A Doll's House'

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's Theatre Arts-University Theatre will interview children for three roles in Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" on Saturday, Sept. 3 by appointment.

Applicants must be able to portray a 5- to 7-year-old boy or a 3-year-old girl.

Rehersals will begin Sept. 15. The production will run Oct. 6-9 and Oct. 12-15 in Squires Studio Theatre on the Virginia Tech campus.

Caregiver support

BLACKSBURG - A support group for caregivers sponsored by the Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center will meet Friday, Sept. 2 from noon to 2 p.m in the intergenerational room on the first floor of Wallace Hall on the Virginia Tech campus.
