EX-DUKE STAR MAKES U. S. SOCCER TEAM

John Kerr, who scored three goals last weekend for Millwall in Division One of the English League, was picked for the U.S. team that will play England on Sept.7 at Wembley Stadium near London.

Kerr, 29, has one goal in 11 international appearances, but hasn't played for the United States since 1988. He was the U.S. college player of the year in 1986 after playing for the Duke team that won the NCAA title.

Among the missing players for the game - the first at Wembley for the United States - will be forwards Roy Wegerle (Coventry City) and Eric Wynalda (VfL Bochum, Germany) and midfielders Tab Ramos (Real Betis, Spain.

Ramos is recovering from a fractured skull, an injury sustained in the 1-0 loss to Brazil in the second round of the World Cup, the last game for the U.S. team. Wynalda has an injured foot.

Foreign-based players picked for the 18-man roster include Juergen Sommer (Luton Town, England); defender Alexi Lalas (Padova, Italy); midfielders John Harkes (Derby County, England), Thomas Dooley (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany) and Claudio Reyna (Bayer Leverkusen); and forwards Ernie Stewart (Willem II Tilburg, Netherlands) and Joe-Max Moore (Saarbruecken, Germany).

Three players with no international experience were selected: Sommer, former UVa defender-midfielder Brian Bates and forward Jovan Kirovski.
