Teamsters staff votes to join union

Office workers in the Richmond office of the Teamsters Joint Council No. 83 of Virginia Health and Welfare/Pension Funds voted overwhelmingly to become members of the union for which they labor.

The office workers help administer health and retirement benefits to Teamsters union members in Virginia.

The clerical workers voted 15-2 Wednesday to align themselves with Richmond-based Teamsters Local Union 592.

Signet completes thrift purchase

Signet Banking Corp. on Wednesday completed its acquisition of Pioneer Financial Corp., a Richmond thrift. Their merger, announced last February, gives Signet 10 new branches in the Richmond and Petersburg areas.

Signet said it will retain 68 of Pioneer's 143 employees.

Under terms of the merger agreement, Pioneer shareholders will receive 0.6232 of a share of Signet stock for each Pioneer share. The acquisition will result in issuance of about 1.5 million new Signet shares.
