THE TIPOFF

WHERE COLLECTORS COLLECT: The 27th annual Gun Show and Flea Market will take over the town of Hillsville today through Monday at the VFW Complex, which stands just a mile from exit 14 of I-77.

It is known for its indescribable array of collectible items, its large stocks of guns on sale and the thousands of people it attracts.

The Grover King Post 1115 of the VFW is the sponsor. Activities started at 8 this morning. They'll continue Saturday, Sunday and Monday begining at 8, as well.

For information about the gun show, call Melvin Webb at 728-9810; about the flea market, call Ernest Martin at 728-7188.

STRONG WINDS: The Virginia Tech University Chamber Music Series will begin its season with concerts this weekend featuring the New River Chamber Winds. Mark Camphouse will conduct.

The group consists of Virginia Tech and Radford University faculty. The concerts will present works by Poulenc, Webern, Vaughn Williams, Mozart and Burkhard. They will take place in the Squires Recital Salon on the Tech campus in Blacksburg. Performances will be Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 3.

Tickets are $7, or $5 for students and senior citizens. Reservations are available from 231-5615 or (800) 843-0332.

CLOSE OUT: The Family Folktale Festival of Lime Kiln Arts will wrap up its run with a performance tonight of ``Munci Meg'' and Saturday night of ``Jack and the Big Tree.'' The one-act plays are drawn from Appalachian fairy tales and legends. Each will begin at 8 p.m.

Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for students.

The whole Lime Kiln season will have its annual send-off Sunday night at 8 from the Metro Blues Allstars, a lively band that tends to make people want to dance. The $14 tickets are growing scarce, so a quick call to 463-3074 might be in order.

OLD FAITHFUL: Sheep dogs and their handlers will demonstrate the fine art of human-to-animal communication at the IAMS Southeast Virginia Mountain Sheep Dog Trial and Fall Driving Championship.

It will be Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., whatever the weather, at the Virginia Tech Sheep Center near the Red Lion Inn in Blacksburg. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students, with children under 12 admitted free.

In the competition, border collies will take voice and whistle commands from their handlers and perform tasks that mimic routine farm work - gathering, driving and herding sheep into a pen or through a narrow gate. Handlers and dogs from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom will participate.

STAR POWER: Roanoke Mayor David Bowers, TV news anchors John Carlin and Kalley King, contestants from the Miss Virginia Pageant and Stan Kingma's Virginians will be among the headliners at ``An Evening with the Stars,'' a fund-raiser for the Roanoke Area Ministries. It will be Thursday night at 7 at Olin Hall of Roanoke College in Salem.

Admission is $25 for a buffet dinner plus fashion show and entertainment. For reservations, call 345-8850.

FINALES: Final performances of the 1994 Garth Newel Summer Chamber Music Festival will be Saturday afternoon at 4 and Sunday afternoon at 3 in Herter Hall of the Garth Newel Music Center near Hot Springs.

On Saturday, Nicolas Danielson, violinist, and Paul Nitsch, pianist, will perform Brahms' sonata, ``Satz,'' in C minor, Schubert's Sonata in A Major, Op. 162, and Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Piano, among other works.

Sunday's program is titled, ``Play It Again, Sam.'' The Garth Newel Chamber Players will perform Three Pieces for String Quartet by Igor Stravinsky, Brahms' String Quartet in B flat Major, Op. 67, and the traditional farewell work of every season, Dvorak's Quintet in A Major, Op. 81.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students. For information, call 839-5018.

MUSIC AND CRAFTS: The Virginia Mountain Crafts Guild will hold its Labor Day Arts and Crafts Show Saturday through Monday at Claytor Lake State Park. Crafts of many kinds, traditional mountain music and foods for sale will be featured.

The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, noon to 6 on Sunday and 10 to 5 on Monday.

RETURN: Bluesman John Hammond will perform at the Iroquois Club on Saturday night at 9. The itinerant musician and singer has hit Roanoke several times in recent years and always seems to draw well.

Tickets are $10. The club is on Salem Avenue in Roanoke. The number to call is 982-8979.
