GALAX GOLFER TAKES HONORS AT FLOYD

Robert Boone of Galax shot a 2-over-par 38 Thursday at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd to earn medalist in honors in a three-way high school golf match.

Galax and Floyd County each totaled 167 and tied in team competition, which also included Shawsville (202). The Buffaloes and Shawnees were playing in a Three Rivers District match.

Other scores for Galax were Scott Sikes (42), Joey Williams (43) and Travis Leath (44).

Leonard Rorrer led Floyd County with a 39. Jonathan Pratt added a 41, Kevin Blevins 43 and Chad King 44.

For Shawsville, Andy Smith shot 44, Keith Armour and Arlis Conner added 51s and Chance Hall 56.

Jerry Wood of Ridgeway shot a first-round 69 on Thursday in the $100,000 Hooters Classic at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wood trails leader Steven Larick of Blythewood, S.C., by five strokes in the T.C. Jordan Tour event.

Two nights of racing will highlight Labor Day weekend at Franklin County Speedway. Races begin at 8 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Monday. Admission for each night is $5 for adults, children under 10 admitted free.
