BUFFALOES TOP CAVALIERS

Floyd County defeated Lord Botetourt 63-56 and Blacksburg topped Patrick County 48-41 as the Buffaloes and Cavaliers advanced to Saturday's championship game of the Floyd County Tip-off in Floyd.

In the opener, Blacksburg (1-1) raced to a 39-21 lead after three quarters and then withstood a 20-point fourth-quarter rally by Patrick County (0-2) to win.

In the nightcap, Floyd's Leigh-Ann Pursifull scored nine of her 14 points in the first quarter and Melissa Cantrell staved off a Lord Botetourt rally with seven fourth-quarter points.

Saturday night, the Cavaliers will face Patrick County at 6:30 in the consolation game, followed by Floyd and Blacksburg in the championship matchup.

Galax 51, Rocky Gap 34: Superior depth by Galax and the overall excellence of Tammy Cox and Jaclyn Dickens boosted the Maroon Tide to victory over the Eagles in the Lady Cavalier Tip-off at Carroll County High School.

Cox scored 14 points and Dickens 13 for Galax (2-0 overall). Rocky Gap was led by Amanda Clark, who scored 10 points.

Carroll County 58, Graham 39: Carroll County wore out Graham with depth and balance to win in the second round of the Lady Cavalier Tipoff tournament at Carroll County High School.

Bethany Hill had 16 points and four assists, and Marie Martin had 14 points and eight rebounds for Carroll County.

Carroll County (2-0 overall) will play Galax at 7:45 p.m. Saturday as the round-robin continues. Graham takes on Rocky Gap at 6 p.m.

Auburn 50, Narrows 44: After swapping the lead with visiting Narrows, Auburn came back with four free throws by Sherry Smith in the last minute to win the non-district opener for both teams and give rookie coach Tim Goetz his first win.

In a game not noted for accurate shooting, the Eagles Lori Lyons led her team with 15 points and Renay Gardner pulled down 13 rebounds. Suzanne Webb scored a game-high 20 for Narrows.

Alleghany 68, James River 39: Natasha Chapman scored 23 points, including six three-pointers, as the Mountaineers downed the Knights in a non-district contest at Buchanan.

Angie Johnson scored 23 points to anchor James River (0-1).

Salem 65, Radford 22: The Spartans outscored the Bobcats 18-0 in the first quarter and led 34-6 at halftime on the way to routing Radford in the season opener for both teams.

Liberty 55, Brookville 47: After a halftime deadlock, Liberty pulled away behind a strong second-half performances by Shannon Jurkus and Sue Lynn Cowlbeck, and won the Seminole District opener.

Cowlbeck 10 of her 18 points in the second half and she added 14 rebounds, Jurkus scored 11 of her 16 after intermission.

\ Lord Botetourt 67, Blacksburg 37: Sara Moore's 18 points led the Cavaliers over the Indians at the Floyd Tip-off Tournament. \

Floyd County 64, Patrick County 50: Carrie Chaffin had 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Buffaloes in their win over the Cougars in the Floyd County Tip-off Tournament. \
