Anyone holding a green card issued before 1979 now will have until March to apply for a new counterfeit-proof card, INS officials said Friday. The old cards, which must be replaced with new permanent resident alien identification cards, had been scheduled to expire Sept.20.
INS officials said the six-month extension was necessary so that thousands of resident aliens who have not yet applied for cards can do so. In addition, they said the extra time is needed so the agency can process a surge of last-minute applications received in the weeks before the former deadline.
