UMBC to leave Big South Conference
The Big South Conference announced that the University of Maryland Baltimore County will withdraw from the league, effective Aug. 31, 1996. Big South commissioner Buddy Sasser said that geographics played a role in the decision.
UMBC, which joined the league along with Towson State in 1992, will be the only Big South member in Maryland when Towson State joins the North Atlantic Conference next year. UMBC's departure will not affect the Big South's eligibility to earn automatic berths to NCAA championship play in any sport. Earlier this summer, the league lost its NCAA bid in men's basketball for one year after former member Campbell joined the Trans America.
